Chasing the Light: The Search for Creative Balance

The Chapel of the Christopher Wren Building
The Chapel of the Christopher Wren Building

Many years ago, I took this photo inside The Chapel of the Sir Christopher Wren Building in Williamsburg, Virginia. I planned to do a photo series of windows with shadows and dancing light.

The photograph was taken one Saturday afternoon around 4:20 p.m. Although the result of this shot is nice, I was not completely satisfied.  When I received my photos back from processing, I wanted to recapture the shot but at a slightly different angle.

Light was key. I was working full time during the week and the following Saturday I had plans.  Not easily deterred, I tried again to claim the perfect image in my mind for many more Saturdays.  Sometimes the weather was cloudy or rainy, and other times, the light just wasn’t right. Then one day it finally dawned on me – with the earth’s rotation, the light was ever-changing.  The moment was gone.

I have learned to embrace the beauty of this photo, rather than noting the flaws.  But it serves as a reminder that creating in the moment is a choice and time passes in an instant.

As a creative individual, how do you balance creating in the moment, yet, tempering the sense of urgency to create, particularly when other life commitments make it challenging?
